Forex brokers in Cyprus are regulated by the well-known Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission, better known as CySEC. Today, however, there are none high leverage forex brokers left in Cyprus after the new regulations that were introduced by the European Securities and Markets Commission (ESMA) in 2018, which also affected Cyprus.
According to the ESMA rules, forex brokers can offer a maximum leverage of 1:30 on major forex pairs to clients categorized as “non-professional” traders. One way around this restriction is to check the broker’s requirements for becoming categorized as a “professional,” but this usually requires a trading account of significant size. An easier alternative for most European traders is therefore to look for a broker that operates not only inside the EU, but also far away from it, for example in offshore countries.
