MetaTrader 4, or just MT4 for short, is by many viewed as the classic trading platform designed for the mass consumer market. The platform came out in 2005 when online forex trading for retail users was still in its infancy. Since then, however, the platform has gathered a large user base and is still among the most popular trading platforms in existence. As a result, a large number of forex brokers that are regulated by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) offer the platform to their users.
A major reason behind the MT4’s popularity is the huge opportunities that it gave to more advanced traders looking to develop and test their own trading strategies. The platform has its own programming language for coding strategies and custom technical indicators called MQL4. Because users were given the chance to contribute with their own coding skills, MT4 now contains one of the largest libraries of trading strategies and indicators of any platform.
