MetaTrader 5, usually just referred to as MT5, is a popular trading platform released in 2010 by the Russian firm MetaQuotes Software. The platform was developed as the successor of the wildly popular MT4, but adoption in the community has taken longer than expected. The main reason cited for this is that the platform was not backwards compatible to work with the many strategies and indicators developed for MT4.
Like its older sibling, MT5 also supports forex and all types of CFDs, including stock CFDs. Many of the brokers that offer stock trading in the form of CFDs therefore provide the MT5 as one of their trading platforms. In addition to the standard downloadable version, the MT5 also exists in a web-based version for use on any computer.
